Waterproofing insulation of the basement of the building

Case 1 ° – light type insulation.
In a building erected on permeable land (gravel, sand), with a low level of groundwater at the same time, rainwater is drained away quickly and there is no risk of water under pressure. In this case, light type insulation is used – multi-layer protective coating, applied on a properly primed substrate, brought out in height 30-50 cm above ground level. The protective coating is made of several layers of cold or hot applied bituminous coatings, or of airtight plaster or sealing coatings. The role of insulation is primarily to close the pores in the top layer of the wall. If there is a possibility of short-term exposure to water under pressure, this type of insulation can only be used if effective drainage is provided to drain rainwater.

2 ° case – medium type insulation
In a building erected on poorly permeable land (clay, clay) with low groundwater levels, there is a possibility of a short-term occurrence of water suspended under pressure in the ground. In this situation, medium-type insulation is performed:
– made of two layers of bituminous felt or foil glued together with binders and covered with a protective coating,
– with two layers of bituminous mass – polymer; the first layer is fused with a fiberglass fabric coated with plastic.
The insulation is brought out to a height of approx 50 cm above the horizontal, for which its use is necessary due to the suspended water level. It is only possible to lay the insulation higher up as in the case of 1 °. With the possibility of prolonged exposure to water under pressure, this type of insulation may only be used if effective drainage is provided.

The 3 ° case – insulation of heavy type
Heavy-type insulation is then performed, when there is a high groundwater level or the possibility of prolonged exposure to pressurized water:
– in the form of a waterproof tub, which is obtained by pouring the foundation slab together with the foundation walls and laying from the outside (under the foundation slab and on the outside of the walls) insulation made of three layers of tar paper or foil,
– in the form of an internal bathtub made of waterproofing concrete,
– made of two layers of bitumen-polymer mass with embedded reinforcing mesh.

The insulation is brought out to a height of approx 50 cm above the highest expected groundwater level (and preferably above the ground). Above it, the insulations described for the 1.2 ° case are successively applied.
